50 + 50 Milano Furniture Fair: Parametric Implemen tation for a Site
Reactant installation (SRI)
Instructor: Caterina Tiazzoldi /GSAPP – NSU
The class will engage architecture’s capacity to respond to human-environmental conditions and develop a
design strategy for an installation to be temporarily inserted in occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the
Milano Furniture Fair.
By selecting a given fabrication material enabling students to explore how parametric design can
eectively and quickly be adaptable to fabrication, site , programmatic and perceptive conditions.
Students will develop a design strategy responding to the program of a lounge at the Salone del Mobile di
Milano 2011.
Starting from formal and constructive frame, students will dene rules of adaptation responding to the
following set of given programmatic, constructive technique and perceptive strategies.
1. Programmatic input: denition of access, circulation, connection with the video installation, shoes
storage.
2. Social : how the dierent type of congurations transform users experience inside the installation and
how do they transform interaction between users.
3. Perceptive input: type of condition to be developed in user’s perception, calm, relax, slow down,
acceleration, amusement, surprise, denition of vi sual axes.
4. Construction technique input: related with the constructive and cost input: unit scaling, unit distribution,
roong, structural response, component listing.1
The work will be developed by groups and organized within a specic set of constrains that will allow
students to achieve their task within the class schedule:
Adaptive rules will be dened on the basis of a grasshopper plug-in for Rhino.

Pre-requisites:
Model associative skills are appreciated but not required.
NB 1:
The class will take place in the context of the Non Linear Solutions Unit (NSU) at the GSAPP/Columbia University,
from the invitation by the chief curator of the Salone Satellite, Marva Grin-Wilshire for NSU to design one of the 6
installations to be exhibited during the 50 th Anniversary of the furniture fair in Milano.
The class will be developed in a strict collaboration with the class 50 + 50 Milano Furniture Fair: Body reactant
interface (BRI) taught by Caterina Tiazzoldi/GSAPP - NSU + Mirko Arcese
NB 2:
Final conguration can be subject of variations on the bases of the requirements of the technical sta of the Salone del
Mobile.
